Rangers ‘battling three English clubs’ for Premier League defender amid contract impasse

The 23-year-old was part of the England squad which captured the European Under-21 Championships

Stewart Fisher

RANGERS are vying with a trio of English clubs for West Ham defender Ben Johnson, according to a report.

The full back - most at home at right back - is out of contract at the Hammers this summer, with recent negotiations over a new deal reportedly coming to nothing.

A number of outlets claim that the Ibrox men are among the clubs pursuing the 23-year-old, who could be available on a permanent deal ahead of his contract running out.

England Under-21 championship winner Johnson certainly has the pedigree to be a good addition.

Johnson, who was handed a debut against Manchester City in 2019, has made almost 60 appearances for the Hammers.

But he has lost ground to Vladimir Coufal and it now appears his time at the London Stadium could be coming to an end.

Relegation threatened Sheffield United are credited with an interest, as are Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds and Southampton.

The Ibrox men appear well set at right back, with Dujon Sterling backing up club captain James Tavernier.

Sterling's emergence as a midfield option in recent times, though, could free up another space - with left back appearing a period of flux in the Ibrox squad.

If Southampton are interested in Johnson could we maybe swap him for Walker-Peters?

Johnson had a massive injury. Then couldn’t get a regular game. He was doing well.

When Coufal had his injury the next season he was crap. Be we persisted and he’s much better again.

Players have to play or they’ll be crap.
